The Servant And I

Note: The below is an article extracted from one of my favourite websites. (link)

So we now have an Indonesian maid. She’s 29 years old, from a farming community in rural Indonesia and arrived in our household with a swollen foot. I took her to see a doctor and he thinks she has gout, which I think is correct because all she was fed was cheap tempeh with rice while she was training (stuff like cooking spaghetti apparently) at the Maid Camp.

I am very uncomfortable with having a human servant in my house, under my employ. In fact, I have never imagined that one day I could ever afford to have a servant. My grandmother used to be the cleaning lady at the local bank, so that’s how poor we were. Once the reality that we now live in a big white house and can afford live-in servants sinks in, I’m totally and utterly shocked.

Yes, I have a maid in China. But she’s employed by the company and doesn’t live in my apartment. So I never really thought of her as mine. But this Indonesian maid is totally under my mercy. She eats what I give her. She sleeps when I tell her. She does whatever she is told to do. I find this responsibility totally humiliating. How can one human bean be subservient to another?

So why did we hire her? Because my wife is delivering soon and the amount of housework (ie. washing nappies) is set to triple. It’s not some social status ego-trip.

Last night, I took her grocery shopping at the local shopping mall. She silently pushed the trolley and followed us while we pursued our usual consumerist fantasies. Later, we went for coffee and cake at a upmarket cafe where she had no idea how to drink a proper cup of tea.

I am running out of things for her to do. Probably the most time-consuming task is that I want all my clothes to be ironed. But she’s done that as well. So I’ve been dumping her at my sister-in-law’s place to help out. She prefers it there because there are children running around whereas my house is really silent.

Just like I try to treat the thousands of people I hire in China like human beings, I try to be nice to my Indonesian maid. She barely understands the Malay I speak to her but I try to chat with her anyway. She does not eat leftovers but whatever my family eats as well. She has her own room and bathroom with a new mattress & pillow. We bought some new clothes for her when she arrived (with a bag containing several old clothes). I also bought her a mini hi-fi for her room so she can relax at night.

I understand very much, that she’s in a foreign country away from her family so that she can earn money.

Isn’t that a lot like me?

I’m also away from my family in a foreign country because I need to earn money.

In a way, I feel a sense of shared understanding with her. So I do try to make it easier for her.

The land of unreason

Written by Yusseri Yusof, Malaysian Insider

MARCH 16 — It has been a long-standing belief among leading thinkers that the world should be governed by men of reason and the laws of physics.

Most of these thinkers do not live in Malaysia.

If they did, they’d quickly realise that our poor multi-racist country is not, in fact, governed by men of reason or the laws of physics. It is instead governed by mystics and the laws of ancient spiritual magic.

That is why it is difficult to be a reasonable person, to apply common sense and basic human decency, in the country. Especially if you’re constitutionally defined as a Malay.

Credulity is a currency in Malaysia. It brings credibility to people that may in fact, be cretins.

What is it about us that makes us so gullible? What is it about us that makes us believe in the absurd, to the point of putting irrational men and women who operate on unreason into positions of authority?

This is a nation where the Selangor Mufti’s Department could hold an “Expert Seminar” on “Forms of Love Magic and Diagnosis Methodology”.

And in that very seminar, the state’s Mufti called for laws to govern the use of magic, especially of the black kind. To appreciate the insanity of the situation, reflect that the man who is the highest authority in his state on matters regarding Islam called on the multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-faith government of Malaysia to consider having laws to “govern” the use of black magic.

To further drive home the depths of the nonsense, the Deputy Spiritual Leader of PAS reaffirmed the Mufti’s call, saying that the use of black magic should result in punishment that could include jail and punishment.
He would say that too, given that apart from being the Spiritual Leader (Deputy), he also runs a clinic that helps to purge patients of afflictions caused by infestation of djinns.

So harebrained was the call by both the Mufti and the Spiritual Leader (Deputy) that the fact that it was made during a “seminar” on “Love Potions” seemed to have escaped the attention of many. Or at least one would like to think that was the case. The alternative explanation — that a seminar on love potions is perfectly normal to most people – does not really bear thinking about.

While there have been no reports of any statements produced, it would not be a surprise if it is found that the Persatuan Peguam Syarie Malaysia wholeheartedly supports the call for the law.

After all, the deputy president of the association had once been reported as saying that he believes that black magic is occasionally employed during trials in court, with clients even bringing bomohs into the courtroom.
There were also other syarie lawyers who were reported to have confessed to experiencing disturbances while presenting their cases. In the Syariah Court. The courtroom where the fates of ordinary men and women are sometimes decided.

And the silliness does not end.

This is a nation where a young man swears on the Holy Book, in a mosque, that he was forcefully sodomised by a former Deputy Prime Minister and have the “ceremony” broadcast on national television.

While at the same time, a man who was actually the Deputy Prime Minister at the time swore on the Holy Book, in a mosque, that he had nothing to do with the alleged murder of a Mongolian translator.

This is a nation where reports of flying prayer mats are taken seriously by the religious authorities.

This is a nation where a father considers being “hypnotised” as a legitimate excuse for marrying off his 11-year old daughter to a lecher who already had four wives.

This is a nation where a party defector is threatened by a 7-day “solat hajat” for God’s punishment if he does not vacate his Parliamentary seat. When asked about the nature of the punishment, the organiser (who happens to be the PAS commissioner for Perak) said that he would leave it to God to decide. As this is being written, the prayers are possibly on the third day of their punishment request.

This is a nation where an NGO in Penang went prowling all over the island to advise and counsel ladies against not wearing their underpants on Valentine’s Day because there was a “no-panties” promotion being passed through word-of-mouth among higher institutions ... in Shah Alam.

This is a nation where defending your racial “rights” is not considered racist, but those who protest against the defense of these “rights” are considered a bunch of ungrateful, social-contract breaking, immigrants. But, if you happen to be of the same race and religion of these defenders, then you are ipso facto a traitor.

This is a nation where online newspapers cannot get press accreditation or publishing permits, but an overtly racist NGO is allowed to produce tomorrow’s toilet paper in quick time.

While all this is going on, a bunch of people keep arguing — for years on end — as to whether Malaysia  should be a secular or an Islamic state.

Never mind the argument about whether we should be a secular or a religious state, we don’t even seem to have the ability to separate between the real and the fantastic states.

And this is why reasonable men and women living in this country should be ever so slightly worried. Because speaking up against the crazy puts you into a basket of labels. The mildest one would be “uneducated moderate”, progressing through to “ungrateful immigrant”, “traitor to the race”, “liberal”, “pluralist”, “hedonist”, “kafir-lover”, “heretic” and usually ending up with “apostate”.

Surely we can do better than this.

What I'm doing,,,

12 more days to go till my final final final ACCA paper on the 1st July. Wish me good luck? Honestly, I'm hardly prepared at all for this, but I think it should be more or less time to start revving my speed up? After all, I only have one paper, and in the words of my tax lecturer, "If you fail this exam, you deserve to die."

Omg, how? If I fail, I'm going to die!!! wheeee~

Ok, i admit that wasn't the suitable response... but o well, you guys know me.

In the mean time, keep yourselves occupied with this:

The Almighty Yuan [via StarBiz] - A elaborate but light discussion on how the American dollar is due to be substituted, and the what's still lacking for the Chinese Yuan to be the ultimate foreign reserve currency. And of course, the impact of that on Malaysia's economy.

And also for those who know the game Bioshock, IGN UK has just released a 9 minute gameplay walkthrough footage for Bioshock 2! And it's awesome!

[News] Obama gives the Queen of England an iPod

source.

Well, it’s better than giving her a bunch of DVDs that don’t work.

President Obama went to the Buckingham Palace today in London where he and first lady Michelle had a lovely tea with the Queen of England.

The press corps from both sides of the Pond was paying close attention to this meeting. After all, it was another gift exchange. Something the president didn’t do too well the last time out.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave Obama an ornamental pen holder carved from the timbers of the HMS Gannet — an anti-slave ship from the 1800s.

President Obama, on the other hand, treated the gift exchange like a Secret Santa party forking over a bunch of American movies on DVDs. If that wasn’t bad enough, it turns out they didn’t work. They weren’t compatible with British DVD players. Read all about this here.

Presents

So what do you give a Queen? Turns out she’s pretty hip. In fact, she owns a Wii.

So putting aside the horrors of the last experience with electronics, the president boldly presented the Queen with an iPod. And it wasn’t empty either.

It would be too easy to load it up with songs like Bohemian Rhapsody from the rock band “Queen.” Or Sid Vicious’s none-too-friendly lyrics about her majesty.

Instead, our friends over at the Telegraph report that the iPod was filled with videos of the Queen herself. Specifically, footage of her 2007 trip to Richmond, Jamestown, and Williamsburg, Virginia.

We haven’t heard complaints from anyone yet. But the Telegraph does note that she already owns an iPod. It’s a 6GB silver Mini though. So, anyone who knows anything about iPods will tell you she needed an upgrade. Pronto.

Apparently he also gave her a songbook signed by Richard Rogers.
------

President Obama’s got a lot riding on his first big adventure overseas. This isn’t like his campaign jaunt when the world went gaga for him.

Now he’s got issues like the global financial crisis, the war effort Overseas Contingency Operation in Afghanistan, U.S.-European Union relations, reducing tensions between Muslim and Western worlds, and relationship-building between the U.S. and China and Russia.

As our much smarter colleague Howard LaFranchi noted earlier today, relationship-building is key here. Really key.
Mr. Obama may well find himself in the inverse position from where George W. Bush stood by the end of his White House run. Whereas Mr. Bush enjoyed greater cooperation and like-mindedness with many key foreign leaders, though he remained unpopular with the international public, Obama is expected to encounter an adoring public but a deep skepticism – even resistance – among heads of state.
Well, we know where he’s got to start. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The president stiffed him the last time they were together. Kinda ‘rick-rolled‘ him as the kids would say.

My gift to you

When Brown was in the U.S. three weeks ago, the two leaders met and had their customary gift exchange. The offices of protocol are responsible for this transaction. And in the case of President Obama, his office performed about as well as Rick Wagoner.

The British PM presented our president with a carved ornamental penholder from the timbers of the anti-slavery ship HMS Gannet. A perfect gift to place on his desk in the Oval Office which just happened to have been made from the sistership of the Gannet — the HMS Resolute.

Think of it this way: 129 years after Queen Victoria presented President Rutherford B. Hayes with the desk made from the Resolute, Prime Minister Brown reunited the ships with this exquisite offering.

Could there have been a more beautiful gift? Outside of perhaps a few trillion dollars?

And for you

Diplomacy goes both ways. And we Americans assuredly don’t want to ruin our sterling reputation abroad. Furthermore, it’s our pal — the U.K.

Sure they burned down the White House. But that’s water under the bridge. It’s Churchill and Roosevelt. Reagan and Thatcher. McCartney and Jackson.

They deserve something substantial. Like maybe they could have one of the original 13 colonies back. Is anyone really going to miss Rhode Island anyway? No offense.

The envelope please

So with history recording every move, President Barack Obama presented Prime Minister Gordon Brown with…..25 DVDs.

And not just any DVDs. But really good ones. Psycho was on one of them. And Star Wars. And E.T.
“Harumph!” said the the snooty British press.

“A gift about as exciting as a pair of socks,” wrote one reporter at the Daily Mail.

Broken

And then there was that other problem. The DVDs didn’t work.

“Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem,” reports the Telegraph. “The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words “wrong region” came up on his screen.”

“He mournfully had to put the popcorn away,” they added.

He wasn’t the only one mourning.

“British diplomats in Washington are still answering more than 2,000 letters of apology from American citizens for Mr. Obama’s alleged insult to the Prime Minister when he visited the White House this month,” the London Times reports.

Come on!

To be fair, it’s not like Obama gave Brown 25 Ben Affleck movies. That would truly be horrific.

The good news is that our president can redeem himself and perhaps offer up Rhode Island as a gift. Throw in Vermont too. And do we really need Nebraska?

The two leaders meet for three hours Wednesday. First they have breakfast, then a formal bilateral meeting and a press conference.

Note to our British friends: Based on what we’ve seen so far at the White House, you might want to request that the fake President Obama from Madame Tussauds House of Wax participate in the press conference instead of the real deal. He would probably be more interesting.

LOTR paragraph extract

Book 4 - Taming of the Smeagol. Page 601.

What a pity that Bilbo did not stab the vile creature, when he had a chance!

Pity? It was pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and mercy: not to strike without need.

I do not feel any pity for Gollum. He deserves death.

Deserves death! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give that to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends.

- Frodo's recollection of his dialogue with Gandalf the Gray, upon his first sight on Gollum.

Kiasu Restaurant Review

The other day, Fyne, Stan and your beloved Chun Howe met up for lunch for a quick de-craving of Malaysian food at the afamed "Kiasu Restaurant" in Bayswater.

Kiasu is a legendary restaurant in the eyes of the home-food-sick people of Malaysia, Singapore, and some would even say Indonesia and Thailand. It's even well known in the circle of the locals here. Hence, we couldn't help but to give Kiasu a run for its reputation and this is what we ordered, under the recommendations of the waiter:

Or Jian (Fried Oyster Cake)
The OJ was too oily for our liking, and even at the spiciest, we were failed to be amused. It did had some oysters and the taste was alright, but OJ was one of the dishes we were looking forward to, and it turned out to be some mash of oyster and flour stirred by a blind man.

 Gado-gado (Mixed salad or sorts)

I think this was called Gado2. I think. I don't eat this quite often back home, but we just tried. Turned out to be a cheap mix of mixed vegetables like sprouts and cucumber alongside an half boiled egg, prawn crackers and satay sauce. Now even a five year old could think of more interesting stuff to put in, like mammoth steak and giant lobster drumsticks.

Char Kui Tiow (Fried Rice Noodles)

This may have saved a bit of Kiasu's reputation, but it still wasn't a match for the food connoisseur that we were for Malaysian food. A debate sprang out of the origins of the cooking style but was soon overshadowed by the discovery that there were no seahams in the CKT!

OMG! NO C-HUMPS IN A CKT!? BLASPHEMY I TELL'YA!

Lo Ark (Braised Duck?)

This, dish, was a complete waste of time. The duck seemed to be pre-cooked and then some horrible bottled sauce bought cheaply from Asda was poured onto it. Horrendous dish, the way it was cook was appaling that they even dared to put this dish on the menu. The locals might be fooled into this but we weren't gonna be...

So despite the bad reviews, why am I still blogging about this? (is it that I want to show off my photography skills?)

Laksa (Rice noodle spicy prawn-based soup)

This thingy, I finished the whole bowl. Despite it's lack of ingredients, its soup was really nice for a change. Well, it could be made using prepacks but hell, I can't write all bad things about the food in a restaurant right? Or else who's gonna treat me dinner to write a review for them in the future? The soup was awesome, noodles were authentically assam laksa noodles (aha, see? we Malaysian know), and the prawn taste stood out and made me hallucinate about dancing prawns swimming in the circle around me~

Verdict: Go to Kiasu and don't order anything else except the Laksa (unless you're a Mat Salleh and can't tell the difference). There're better Malaysian food restaurants outside anyway.

Bank Slogans - Ad nauseam

Article extracted from The Economist.com from here (02.10.2008). Subscribe from them if you can, it's good brain food!

WHILE financial firms were taking giant punts to give their profits some va-va-voom, their marketing departments were conjuring up phrases to convey the impression that banks and insurers, like diamonds, were forever. Now that the future’s not bright, it is obvious that some were probably the worst corporate slogans in the world. From American International Group, a collapsed insurer (“the strength to be there”), through to Lehman Brothers (“where vision gets built”) and IndyMac, a failed bank (“you can count on us”), boastful institutions snapped, crackled and popped under pressure.
The home of the whoppers is America, but the trend has been connecting people globally. In incredible India, ICICI, despite being the bank of a billion smiles, was led to deny rumours of a run. And pure, natural, unspoilt Iceland has bailed out its third-largest lender, Glitnir, which although fast, smart and thorough, faced a funding crisis.

Yet not all banks failed to do exactly what it said on the tin. Through their slogans, Benelux’s lenders gave an eerie premonition of the massive state rescues to come. Dexia warned that “the short term has no future,” and Fortis asked, “here today, where tomorrow?” Not since Enron invited the world to “ask why” has an interrogative slogan been as prescient.
And consider also the few, the proud, that chose just to do it and openly advertise their risks. Countrywide promoted itself as a “lender that actually finds ways to make loans”. (When debtors lost their passion to perform, it was bought for a reassuringly expensive price by Bank of America.) The mortgage agency Fannie Mae, now state-controlled, fully disclosed that “as the American dream grows, so do we,” making clear what would happen if the world lost its faith in America. And no one comes close to Washington Mutual, whose slogan (“Whoo hoo”) should have given investors a clear warning about its risk appetite. Hello Boys! Wasn’t it obvious?

OMG! You killed Kenny!

Do you know about the famous American adult cartoon Southpark, known for its strong languages and hilarious parodies?

One of the most memorable episodes I watched was "Make Love, not Warcraft", with Warcraft being the craze in the Sunway Monash condo then. Another one was the episode about Sea people, Mormons, and sea man. Sea- what? Yea, Sea Men, and you can say that again, it's completely legal.

And now, you can make your own Southpark avatar!

Chunhowe now!

Doesn't really look like me, but oh well, this was really funny k!

Younger Chunhowe! Cute right? ahaha~

Anyway, if you are interested in getting one for yourself, go to their site here (Southpark Avatar Creator), and if you want to know more about this show, visit wikipedia (here)

Maybe just that there’s something both humbling and exhilarating about generating a new idea. Anyways, I finally decided to close the poll. After all, it has been running for several weeks now. And here are the final results!

Damn bad lah, you people. How can let them die out? Must send them to TwT (tinn in the tagboard)'s garden mah. There, they will grow mushrooms and tomatos and taufufas and live happily ever after.

The new poll is up, straight up from one of t he more recent posted topics: GHOSTS. Do you believe in them? I mean, from all the typical Chinese ghosts to the more recent western flicks like The Eye and to the Amityville Horror... How come the angmo's don't see as much ghost as we do? How come nobody sees indian ghosts one? Is God racist so that dead Japs go to a Nipponhell where people get scalded in ichiban ramen soup rather than an oil bath?

# One of the Most Anticipated Games of the Year... Mirror Edge!

@ gametrailers.com

Mirror's Edge was announced almost a year ago and has slipped quitely under radar until now! It's powered by Unreal Engine 3, in addition to a new lighting solution developed by EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE). The video of the gameplay shows a clean, brightly coloured, and realistic enviornment. You can do things such as wall-running, climbing up sides of buildings, leaping long distances, and much more. The game trailer of real gameplay footage shows how freely the main character, Faith, moves. When she leaps you can see her arms and legs flailing in the most realistic way.

POLITICS! ohmyallah!

I knew the political scene back home in Malaysia was changing for the better, since the elections in March caused the BN mofos to rethink their strategies and views. If you guys remember, our beloved PM Abdullah Badawi actually lamented that he and BN actually lost to the new media of the internet age, which i thoroughly agree through and through.
